Questionwe live in flint michigan....beautiful dogwood bush on sw corner & is thriving a bit too much and also reddish bayberry bushes with lots of new growth sticking out all over...when to prune and how.they are doing good but need to be kept under some control also..thanks.......r. panter
AnswerThe dogwood can be pruned any time after it is done flowering. I would recommend that you not shear it or the barberry, but instead hand prune them to reduce their size and maintain their natural shape. Do not prune past the last set of leaves on the bayberry, it will take a long time for the plants to recover from this radical of a pruning.
In any case, try your hand at pruning them, remembr that they will always grow back.
Good luck.
