Need a shallow root structure

Question
I have just discovered that my six year old Rose of Sharon tree which is now about six feet tall is planted over the main water connection to my house. What is the root structure like? Is this a shallow root structured shrub? Would it survive in a huge pot? When should I move it? If I relocate it to another area it may not get as much sun as it does now, and it may still be hazardous if it has a deep root structure.

Answer
Norma,
All plants have roots that reach down at least 18 to 24 inches. Some develop taproots that go down further, but Hibiscus is not one of them.
I would not suggest putting this plant into a planter- it has become too large and requires a larger area for root development.
If you are going to move it, I would wait until the early Fall, this time of year will help to support the plant to reestablish it's root system before the winter.
As far as the reduced sunlight that it would recieve, Rose of Sharon will do well in partial to full shade.
Good luck.
