Hello
I live in Minnesota and am inquiring about the thuja tree--Is it really a fast grower as well as able to withstand our climate? If not, any ideas on fast growing tall shrubs? ( to block neighbors chain link fence) Thank you for your time.
Answer -
Sara,
Actually Thuja, or Arborvitae, are slow to medium growing evergreens, only growing between 12- 24 inches a year.
For a fast growing plant, I would recommend Buddlelia or Butterfly bush, Leyland Cypress or any of the white pines.
Good luck.

It states the "thuja giant tree" ( a type of arborvitae) is a fast growing 3-5 ft per year AND is resistant to deer and bugs. Thee are many types, this is called "giant".
AnswerSara,
Yes, they are Western Arborvitae (Thuja plicata). The Green Giant variety are a more rapid grower than the other varieties of Western Arborvitae. However, I would not expect 3-5 feet of growth per year, you can expect anywhere from 2-3 feet of growth per year.
Good luck.
