How do I determine if a plant is an acid-loving plant? I'm currently particularly interested in Nandina and Bougainvillea.

Most of the time care instructions will be provided when you purchase a new plant.
As far as the plants you mentioned go, Nandina thrives in an acidic environment, while Bougainvillea will adapt to just about any soil.
