QuestionWe have a variety of these shrubs and this season one has not a leaf on it and some are only partially with leaves. The branches are not brittle so I assume the shrubs are not dead. I live in CT and our winter was not a harsh one so I don't know if that is the reason, or, do they need to be fertilized, the shrubs are about 10 years old. Should we cut the limbs that have no leaves off now or when. These have always been a nice boundary and we hate to lose any. Thanks
AnswerMary Ann,
This Rose of Sharon may be under stress for a variety of reasons, I would first have you check the buds that are present. Pull one off and open it up, if it is green, then there is still hope. Fertilize it and keep it well watered for a few weeks to see if it buds open up.
If they are brown, then the plant is probably dead and should be removed.
Good luck.
