rose of sharon & flame tree

Question
i am not sure of the age but i do know that it is about four feet tall and it is wickedly thin, i know i need to prune it but not really sure how? honestly i am trying to learn but so far all i know is what i have always done sit them on the porch, water them and give em food every once in a while. so with that said can you give me info on how to do this and is it ok to keep them in a planter and keep them trimmed or will i eventually have to transplant it?

the flame tree is a tree with bright orange flowers with red dots on them the places that i have seen them grow of course is hawaii guam texas and someplaces in florida, but i would like to grow one and i live in atl, Ga. not sure if they can grow here or if i put it in a planter like the rose of sharon and bring inside in the winter do you think it would survive?

Answer
Michelle,
The Rose of Sharon, should really be planted in the yard. They require room to grow and will become potbound if left in the pot for too long. This tree would not require any special care if planted in the garden, fertilize them once a year and make sure they are watered in periods of drought.
As far as the flame tree goes, I have not had much experience with this plant. From what I have found on it though I gather that It too can be planted in the yard in the southern states and will survive as long as there are no periods of extended freezing temperatures during the winter.
I hope this answered your questions.
Good luck.
