QuestionI have 2 Oleander shrubs that are about 2-3 yrs old and each winter the leaves turn brown and eventually fall off in the spring. The leaves do grow back, but the shrubs don't flower much if any. I live in Northeast Texas and I have seen some Oleander's growing well here. I don't remember what type of Oleander they are, but they have a dark pink flower. They are located on each side of my driveway and they get part sun. Is there anything that I can do to make them flower more?
AnswerCindy,
Oleanders thrive best in full sun, they tolerate partial shade but they don't do as well. I would recommend cutting them back now to remove dead and winter damaged wood. Also remove the dead flower clusters to encourage long blooming. Finally, do not prune them too late in the fall and try to protect them with burlap during the cold winter months.
Thanks for the question.
