I have an evergreen fir tree, its about 6ft in height. Lat year something happened to it and the
very top and some branches from the top down died.
Can I cut these off without doing any damage to
the rest of the tree.

Yes you can prune these dead areas off. I would recommend cutting the leader at least three inches below where the last dead area is, this will remove any boring insect that could have caused the initial damage.
I would recommend fertilizing the tree as well. This will help to strenghten the fir from secondary damage from diseases.
