Meyer Lemon Trees, Leaf Drop

Question
Hi, Ed, I purchased 2, two foot tall Meyer Lemon Trees from a local greenhouse last October 2005.  They came a bit pot-bound, so I transplanted each into a bigger terracotta pot. Watered them once a week. The leaves started to yellow and fall off. I cut back the water to 1/2 gallon, once a week, and gave them each some Miracle Grow.  A little bit later, they had scale which probably came with the plants. I treated that with horticultural oil once a week for a month. The scale is now at bay.

The leaves now fall off when green. I pulled the plants out of their pots yesterday and examined the root balls. No new growth and still somewhat pot bound. I shook off a lot of the old soil, loosened up the root ball and replanted, and watered thoroghly. Do these plants have a chance? They are currently indoors in Connecticut, get about 1 hour of direct sunlight in the a.m., and bright indirect light the rest of the day. They will get moved out doors around the end of April, if they make it.  Any ideas?  Should they get some Ammonium sulfate?  Help!

Answer
Mimi,
It is posible that you nave been overwatering it. You should be watering evry 2 weeks or when the top most soil is very dry. Only water until the water pools up in the catch basin under the pot. Remember to dump out any excess water because Meyers lemons do not like alot of water.
Fertilize it with a biosimulant fertilizer that contains mychorrizae (this is a beneficial fungus that will enhance root growth and nutrient absorbtion).
Also do not keep removing them from their pots, you can inadvertently damage the fine roots of the tree.
I hope this helps.
