Winter care of shrubs

Question
We live in zone 5 (Chicago) and have Rose of Sharon, Red Chokeberry, Viburnum, Wiegela and Carefree Roses. What needs to be done for winter?

Answer
Sharon,
Of the plants that are listed, the Hibiscus, Aronia, Weigela and the Carefree Roses are undoubtedly deciduous. The Viburnum is the only question. There are some varieties that are deciduous and some that are evergreen. If they are the deciduous variety, then nothing needs to be done, and that goes for the other deciduous plants on the list as well. If, however, it is an evergreen, then the best preparation for the winter is to spray it with an Anti-dessicant. Anti-dessicants are applied to the leaves during the mid to late fall to seal the leaves and prevent moisture loss through the winter.
