Hydrangea transplanting

Question
Hello,
I need to transplant a hydrangea that has been in the ground for approx. 8 years....it it doing poorly in the present location(full sun) My question is: when is the best time to move it to a better location?  I live in central New Jersey.
Thanks

Answer
Dawn,
Now would be the best time to move the Hydrangea. Makesure that you take a large enough root ball, preferablly the distance to the ends of the foliage, and keep it watered in its new location until the ground freezes. Fertilization (with a low Nitrogen fertilizer) 2 weeks before the plant is moved will help the plant establish itself more rapidly in it's new location as well as lessen the transplant shock that it may go into in the spring. In the spring, fertilize it again, and keep it well watered until it is fully established.
