QuestionI live in Northern NY state and last week had 10 6 foot high Colorado spruce trees planted on my property line. There is a nearby deciduous Maple tree that casts shade part of the day on some of the trees.Tthe Spruce trees will get more sun once the leaves fall off that tree. Does light reqirements for these trees pertain after the growing season and not just in summer or early Fall? The trees require as a species partial to full sun. Does partial sun mean partial as in part of the day or by some other standard? Thank you
AnswerBill,
The light requirements for all plants refer to not only during the growing season, in our case it is late March- early April to mid October, but also to how much light the trees recieve each day. The description partial sun is generaly used when an area recieves less than 4 hours of direct sunlight per day.
As long as the Spruces will get more than 4 hours of direct sunlight each day, then they will be fine.
Remember to keep them well watered right up until the first frost, make sure they are well mulched to insulate the roots from the summer and winter temperature extremes and fertilize them this fall with a biostimulant containing mychorrizae to help build up their root mass through the winter months.
