Planting Butterfly Bush

Question
Hi,
I am from Atlanta, GA. I would like to plant a butterfly bush, but I am not sure if it would be safe to plant close to the house wall. Would you please advise on this?

If it is OK to plant close to the house, how far from the wall do I need to plant it, so the roots have space to grow.

Thanks,Esha

Answer
Esha,
The roots of a Butterfly bush are not invasive, that is they will do no damage to the house foundation.
I would recommend that it be planted at least 2-3 feet from the house to allow for the normal growth of the plant. Buddelia will grow up to 5 feet a year and out at least 3 feet a year.
For the best growth, prune it back hard in the early spring. This will help to spark better growth next year.
Remember to keep it well watered during the hot summer and use very little to no nitrogen fertilizer for the first year.
I hope you will enjoy this beautiful bush.
