Questionmy plants are new this year and are still small but the problem is that they are not the deep green color that i wanted and are starting to have yellow leaves on them, we have had a lot of rain the past few weeks and i wondered if that is the reason and if so when do i start watering again. thank you annie
AnswerAnnie,
Usually Mountain Heather likes full sun to partial shade and moist soil conditions, but if you have had a lot of rain in the past few weeks, I would start by checking that there is proper drainage in the area. Excess water will drown the newly growing roots and cause the plant to decline.
Was fertilizer put down when the heather was planted? If too much fertilizer is used, the nitrogen can also damage the root systems and cause a yellowing of the leaves.
For the most part, I think that they might be going through some transplant shock. I would recommend that if they were not fertilized at planting, that you fertilize them with a low nitrogen, high potassium fertilizer. This will encourage root growth, while helping to deepen the color.
As to when to start watering, You should check the soil about an inch or two down. If the soil is moist, then you do not need to water. If it is dry, then water for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 days.
