QuestionMy forsynthia bush is tall and has plenty of GREEN leaves but very few yellow flowers. Could it be lacking fertilizer or would the soil being more clay have something to do with the lack of flowers? How do I correct this problem ? Also, why would my perinials be 1-2 wks behind in their growth stages than my neighbors perinials? The perinials in the town we live in are 1-2 wks behind the surrounding town's perinials!! we are in NJ.
AnswerCarol,
It is too late for flowers this year as forsythia flowers are formed the previous year. Usually the only two things that cause forsythia to have leaves but no flowers are the plants growing in shade or having been pruned in the late fall and removing the flower buds. There are not any products you can apply to correct. If they are growing in a shaded area you would need to increase sunlight by removing tree branches above. If you prune these plants only do so before the 4th of July as the day length is shortening.
As far as the perennials go plant development in the spring is usually related to temperature. Without seeing your property I am going back to the shade issue. A shaded lot would warm up a bit slower than a lot with full sun. There isn't anything you can do but enjoy your perennials when they do bloom
