Question -
I live in North carolina.
I have an area in my back yard that stays kind of wet and marshy. I would like to have a row of shrubs in this marshy area which is kind of in front of a "natural" area. The shrubs or bushes would have to like a lot of water and not need total direct sun. (if it got direct sun, it would probably not be so wet - right?)
What could I plant that would drink up some of the water and grow pretty tall, pretty fast?
Any ideas?
thank you
Gary,
I know why it is wet. There has been increased developement above us which has created water runoff that we never used to have in a formerly dry creek bed at the back of my property. The developers did not plan for all the water runoff they have created for us because it doesn't affect their (higher up) property. We can't get anyone to do anything about it so I was hoping for some kind of plant to help control the erosion. If that isn't possible then oh well. Thanks anyway.
Answer -
Susan,
The area of your property that is wet and marshy is wey and marshy for a reason, probably due to water table, etc. You can not plant certain shrubs to help dry up the area as they will not use that much water.
You should consider finding out it is so wet and remedy that situation,if possible, before planting shrubs.
Good luck
Gary
AnswerBarberry, ternstroemia, hypericum to name a few
Remember I am recommending plants without seeing your intended location. go to your local nursery or garden center to look at these and any others their local experts can suggest.
Good luck
Gary
