new plantings

Question
Hi, I live in S. IND.; soil is primarily clay.
would like to plant hedges; about 400 ft. worth.
As I say soil quality is poor; your advice as to
what to plant, how far apart, where to buy, ect.
Also, need to plant some ground cover in shade/
partial sun area.  what would be best buy for the
money?  Any help appreciated.  Thanks

Answer
Hi jim
Lots of shrubs will grow in clay you just have to be careful of the drainage. adding good topsoil at planting time would be helpful. first thing you need to do is decide what the purpose of the hedge, privacy or ornamental. then make your selection based on site conditions and personal taste. as far as your groundcover try some pacasandra that is usually a favorite and should work for you.  Good Luck  Larry  ;-)
