Question
Hi - I have a weeping cherry tree that I am sure has a bore in it.  We planted this tree in memory of my husband three years ago, so I really want to try to save it. I can see the holes in the base of the tree, but again this year, the tree has many buds.  What can I use to kill the bore and how do I (if I should) cover the wound at the base of the trunk.  Thank you

If the tree still has green foliage I would try treating the trees with an insecticide called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control. This is applied to the soil around the tree and the roots carry the insecticide to the trunk and branches and when a borer enters the tree it is killed. This will prevent borer attack for the season. Here is a web link to this product--check with your local garden type store for it. Also borers attack trees that are under stress. I would fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb. per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good. Apply just before a rain event and you will not need to water in.
