QuestionSome of our aspen trees have clusters of tiny scabs working their way up the trunks. They look grayish in color, and are about the size of an aphid, but don't appear to be bugs. Some of the tree trunks are mostly covered. These trees are dying. Other trees just have a few. Do we need to remove the infected trees or is their something else we can do. What is this? AnswerSounds like the crawling stage of aspen scale or oyster scale. A picture would help a lot. Please attach a picture to the question. These can be controlled by spraying the trunk with Orthene an insecticide. If the foliage is healthy then the teed will be fine no need to remove it.
