QuestionMy wife and I are considering putting an offer in on a house that has 6 redwood trees in the backyard. My concern is that the trees are planted in a row quite tightly spaced and are exactly 8 ft from the pool edge and 35 feet from the foundation of the house. I am wondering whether we will have difficulty with the root system cracking the pool wall or disrupting the house foundation at that distance. I am also wondering how far out from the trunk the branch canopy will extend. I am not sure what species of redwood trees that they are but I can say that they are relatively young based on their height relative to the other redwoods planted in the neighborhood. It appears that whoever the developer was they planted quite a few redwoods considerably close to the homes in the development. I would really appreciate any insight you have on the subject.

AnswerThe root system will extend about 1 1/2 times the length or width of the branches. Redwood trees like water and if the pool has a small leak the roots will grow that direction. I would think without seeing the trees that 8 feet from the pool is too close. The 35 feet from the house would not seem to be a problem. Another problem with redwoods is the needle drop into the pool and the clean up of the needles. IF quite a few are dropped then this can effect the chemical readings and chemicals in the pool. I would replace the trees with a better screen shrub that will not get as large and have the root or needle drop problem. I hope this helps and answers your question.
