Swedish Aspen

Question
Hi, about 3 years ago I planted some Swedish Aspen trees in my backyard. Recently I have found wasps have been hovering all around them. I have also noticed that some of the leaves on said tree have been shiny. Wondering why they are there. And how to get rid of them. My family has been stung one too many times because of this and we're always in our yard.

Answer
Sounds like an insect called aphids. These soft bodied insects suck the plant juices from the plant and secrete a substance called honeydew. When they do this sap drips like a fine mist. Honeydew is high in sugar content and is sticky. The wasps are collecting the honeydew. To stop the sap you will need to treat the aphids. Spray the foliage and limbs with an insecticide called Orthene. This will kill the aphids and the honeydew and the wasps will go away. Since this is a small tee you should be able to spray all the leaves and branches.
