Pink stain and holes in Lodgepole Pine

Question
pink stain lodgepole
pink stain lodgepole
Hi Jim
what is causing this pink staining and small insect holes and tunnels in this lodgepole pine?

Sincerely,
Laura G
Alberta Canada

Answer
The pink is a fungi called Arthrographis: This fungus causes a pink stain in heartwood and sapwood of pine, birch, hemlock, spruce, fir, oak, and Douglas Fir,
I would guess the beetle had the fungi spores on it when it borer into the wood. The beetles I think are European shot-hole borer, Xyleborus dispar. Here is a web link to some information on this beetle and a picture with the pink fungi. http://oregonstate.edu/dept/nurspest/xyleborus_dispar.htm
