QuestionI'm thinking about getting some fast growing trees to provide shade around my home.
I see so many different descriptions of the Royal Empress (Kiri, Princess, Paulownia, Foxglove Empress Tree) and different photos of the shapes of their leaves from feathered 4 x 10 inch longer leaves to very large 12 x12 inch heart shaped sized leaves. Colors from deep purple/blue to pink and lavender.
If all of the online tree sellers call it the same thing... how do you know what you're getting.
I live in N Carolina and there are NO sellers here within an acceptable driving distance.
Could you please give me some answers and advise?

AnswerRoyal Paulownia, empress-tree, karri, foxglove tree, princess-tree, paulownia are all common names for Paulownia Tomentosa. It does grow fast but can be messy with the flowers and seeds. Here is a NC web link http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/factsheets/trees-new/paulownia_tomen
I would not plant this tree in my yard --it does sprout and will cause you trouble down the road. NC climate varies so much from the coast to the mountains and I am not sure where you live so recommending a tree for you would be difficult. I would recommend that you call your local office of the NC Forest Service ()state agency) and ask one of their Forester to recommend a tree that fits your needs that will grow in your areas well. Check the local phone book for their number.
