QuestionI have a very large walnut tree in northern California that I severed a couple of roots, one is at least an inch to inch and a half in diameter, and is leaking quite a bit of fluid into my ditch. Is there a good way of stopping the leaking without harming the tree? I have tried wrapping and spraying tree seal but was unsuccessful. Would burning the root with a torch work?
AnswerThis is normal. Do not worry about it the tree will heal over the wound by itself. In the spring the trees are pulling a lot of water from the soil to aid in growing the new foliage so there can be leaking form a fresh wound. The cells around the wound will heal over without you doing anything.
Damaging the wound will slow the healing and could allow fungi to enter the wound. So let it be as is it will stop on its own. No harm is being done to the tree with the leaking.
