Question
leafs and berries
I have a few trees I believe are ash. They have the opposing branches, very thick, cork like spongy bark, 9 leaflets on each leaf but... one has round green berries on it, in clusters like small green grapes, the other does not;. the wood is also strange, It really smelled when we burned some last winter and is yellow when you cut it open, doesn't leave any real mess with sap or anything when cut. i have seen pics of MT Ash but they have yellow to orange to red berries, this one has green, i have pics!

AnswerI am not real sure so I checked with a forester who is well versed in ortamental trees and here is his thoughts:
"It looks like some type of Sorbus but not the S. americana. The leaf does not quite look right and all the literature says the fruit turns red. There are well over 100 species of Sorbus and my best guess would be another species. I googled sorbus species and looked at quite a few but could not find a definitive match. There is a species called S. decora that is native to the northern US and Canada that has a very similar leaf and is apparently grown by nurseries and used in landscaping. I'm thinking maybe a cultivar of that species. Without looking at the tree in my hand that's about as close as I can get. One of the websites I picked up on was from U. of Conn so maybe someone up there is more familiar with those species. I have only seen the S. americana up in the Carolinas and they are impressive in the fall."
These are all species of mountain ash.
I would suggest that you contact the U. of Conn. and see if they can pin it down further.
