QuestionI live in Central Texas. I just received my tree from fastgrowingtrees Thursday. The tree looks pitiful but is alive. What can I do besides watering it help it revive. Can I add miracle grow to the water? I dont want it to die. I have placed in on my covered porch because right now it is 100 degrees or more every day.
AnswerWell there is a major problem with trying to plant trees in the summer months especially in the South. Worst time to plant a tree. It is too hot and too dry. Sounds like the tree is not in the ground--if not I would suggest that you plant the tree where you want it to grow not not try to grow it in a pot etc.
Dig the new hole twice the size of the root ball and as deep. Remove any burlap and or wire covering and place the tree in the hole and fill with potting soil that contains a water holding element. Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk (pine straw is good). This will help hold moisture around the roots. water with 1 inch of water-place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Do this every third day for a month then once a week. You can skip the watering if it rains good that day. DO NOT fertilize the tree for the first year.
The chances for survival are not too good planted in the summer due mainly to the hot dry weather. I would check and see IF that nursery has a guarantee that the tree will live and if so IF the tree does die contact them for a new one but tell them you want it in the Fall or early spring. Good luck!
