QuestionHi I live in Central Texas. I have a crepe myrtle that was transplanted in early April. The leaves have died, but the scratch test shows that the limbs are still alive. Just today it started oozing down one of the trunks. We are having one of the hottest driest summers on record. Do you think my tree is dying? Anything I can do to help it survive the summer?
AnswerSounds like there was not enough root system dug when it was transplanted. The tree is under going shock form the move and lack of roots. If you have not done so I would mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch (pine straw is good) not piled up on the trunk and water with 1 inch of water--place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Do this daily for a week then every third day unless you get a good rain. This will hold moisture around the tree roots and help stimulate growth of the roots.
