QuestionMy 9-year-old cut about a 1" ring of bark away from the base of our Miniature Weeping Cherry tree and now sap is oozing out in the injured area. Can we treat the wound and how?
thanks!
AnswerIf you are saying that a 1 inch ring all the way around the trunk was cut then there is a good chance the tree will die from this girdling of the cambium layer. In this case you might try potting pruning was on the wound and wrapping it with tree tape--these can be gotten from a garden type/nursery store. This will help hold the moisture and hopefully allow the cambium to grow back. IF the cut was not all the way around the trunk I would put nothing on it but spray the area with an insecticide to keep borers from attacking the wound. Any house hold insecticide will do but with these you will need to re-spray weekly. Or get a product called Merit and this will last for a month or so. After that time the wound will not be attractive to the insects. Do not out anything on the wound if not around the trunk since this may slow the healing process,
