QuestionShould I purchase colorado blue spruce trees that have been sitting out of the ground with root ball watered regularly for 3 months? I have always thought that it is best to take trees right from ground when transplating... I would really appreciate an answer this weekend if at all possible... Thanks!
AnswerNO A couple of reasons--entirely wrong time of the year (hot weather is the worst time to plant a tree), IF a tree has been sitting out of the ground for 3 months this time of the year the chance that it will survive is low. I would not waste my money and time on these trees, Wait until the Fall or early next spring to plant conifers. Then dig the hole twice the size of the rootball and as deep and fill with good topsoil or potting soil. Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. Remove the burlap and wire before the tree is planted. Water every third day with 1 inch of water--place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Buy the trees form a local tree nursery that has a guarantee that the tree will live.
