QuestionI have a fruitless weeping mullberry tree, we have had it for about 2 yrs. This year I have oak limbs coming out of the bottom of the trunk of the tree, what should I do. The sprouts of oak are coming out of the tree trunk and not the ground. Will this hurt the mullberry?
AnswerUsually fruitless weeping mulberry is formed by grafting onto an American mulberry root stock. It would not be an oak root stock. The new leaves of American mulberry can look similar to an oak. You should be able to tell from the rough underside surface of the mulberry leaf. These sprouts can and should be cut off flush with the trunk. If left to grow they will sap the root system of energy and grow into a regular mulberry tree. Prune them off as soon as you see them and it will be better and the wound will heal faster.
