Question
baby white pine
Hi, i moved a young white pine (pretty sure that's what it is) from our backyard to our front yard to a more sunny location and right next to a dirt road. It's done fine up until the end of winter til now, early spring. We live in Michigan so our weather is crappy for the most part. I've attached a picture. I'm not sure if this is normal for it to do. When i took a picture of it i could see there's still a lot of green needles, even mixed in with the orange ones, and there seems to be new sprouts at the very top... It just looks sick to me. Is there anything wrong with it?
AnswerIt looks like shock from the transplant. Maybe the roots were damaged during the move. IF there is green growth on the tips of the branches it means the tree is still alive and should make it. It will not look too great with most of the needles gone but the new growth should allow the tree to survive. The tree will have needles at the ends of the branches the ones that fell off will not be replaced. You have some mulch I would add pine straw mulch out about 18 inches around the tree and not more than 3 inches deep this will help hold moisture around the tree roots. About a 50/50 chance that it will make it.
