QuestionI have an autumn blaze maple that had two main trunks when I purchased it. I did not know at the time I should have cut one back I planted it and now it is about 20 feet tall. We live in an area where it can get quite windy. This fall I noticed that it is starting to split. I'm not sure whether I should cut the weaker trunk off? Can I band it and it will fuse back together? I just don't want to lose the tree because it is so beautiful.
AnswerMy first thought about the forked maple is leave it alone. But a picture would help give a better idea of what is involved. Removing the fork will not make the tree any taller but will make the crown lopsided. Since the "branches" are this large I lean toward doing nothing.
You can install a cable between the forks by drilling through the limbs and putting in a long eye-bolt with a large washer on the outside end. A cable can be attached to the eye bolts with a turn buckle and tighten the cable until snug. This will keep the limbs from breaking off.
