weeping Laurel Oak

Question
My Laurel oak is weeping something.  It is very obvious all under the canopy.  We are in Sarasota Fl and the tree looks very healthy and is about 50" tall in a residential area.  I don't see this on other trees nearby although they appear to be a little different, perhaps live oaks.

Answer
Sounds like a scale insect. IF the sap dropping is sticky then this is a secretion from the scale insects called Honeydew. It is high in sugar content and sticky. Control the scales and the honeydew goes away. Scale insects suck the plant juices from the tree and look like small turtle shells on the twigs and small branches.
Treat the tree with a soil applied insecticide called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control. Check with your local garden type store for this. The roots will carry the insecticide to the foliage and the twigs and when the scale insects suck the plant juices they are killed. The treatment will last the whole season.
