QuestionI have a healthy crabapple tree with multiple spouts coming up. I'd like to transplant one to another area.
Could you please provide instructions? I;m not sure if they are coming from fallen seeds or from roots.
AnswerYou will need to dig down around the sprout and see if it is connected to a large root from the parent tree. Root sprouts van not be moved successfully since their root system is the same as the parent tree. The only way to determine this is genitally dig down around the seeding to see if it is attached to a root from the tree. IF not you can dig the seedling and move it to where you want it. Dig about a six inch ball of soil with it to insure the roots are not damaged. Make the new hole twice the size of the root ball and as deep. I would expect though that the sprout is coming for the parent tree root.
