QuestionMy pine trees are dying. I live in northwest ohio just southwest of Toledo. We moved to my present house about three years ago and I noticed the few scotch pines on my property were dying from the bottoms up. I lost all three of them the following year. Last year I noticed my mature Norwegian pines were starting to die, again from the bottom up. I had someone come out and he suggested spraying them with Malathon which he did. I should point out that he said he didn't see any obvious bugs on them but did see bagworms on my arborvita trees. This year they're even worse. I did some online research and thought maybe its a fungus. The article stated that a Bordeux mix could cure them of the fungus (if thats what it is). Do you have any advice you could give me.
Thanks,
Mark
AnswerThe information is really not enough to id the problem. BUT check and see if the needles on the ends of the branches are green . IF they are green and the needles that are turning brown are nearer to the trunk and not on the end of the branches this is normal needle drop. Pines have two sets of needles at one time and they will drop the older set before new needles bud out. IF all the needles are brown then the tree is dead probably from bark beetles. A picture would help of the trunk and the foliage. There are very few diseases that would cause what you described.
