QuestionWe are deluged with little black bugs from our backyard willow tree...it happens every year about this time. The bugs are all over the house and patio too. I think they are some kind of a willow tree weevil. What should I do to eliminate this problem? Is there a non chemical solution?
Thanks in advance for your input.
AnswerSounds like willow flea beetles. Spray the foliage with an insecticide. Garden insecticides containing carbaryl (Sevin), spinosad, bifenthrin and permethrin can provide fairly good control. I would recommend Orthene which is a systemic that will last a little longer than the others. These are contact insecticides and you may have to spray a couple of times about a week apart to make sure you cover all the beetles present.
They will not kill the tree unless there is several years of complete defoliation.
Next spring treat the soil around the tree with Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect control and this will prevenmt attack for the growing season.
Check with your local nursery/garden type store for an insecticide for flea beetles.
