saving a blue spruce tree

Question
Help, I planted a blue spruce in spring this year in N. E. Arkansas, a beautiful blue tinted accent tree in front of our house. July into all of August was absent of rain, but not HOT weather, and did my best to keep it wet. Stress has set in and its turning brown, and need advise to save it. Thank you very very much and appreciate any suggestions. Terry

Answer
Sounds like too much water. Decrease the amount of water to the tree--a tree needs about 1 inch of water each week and the best way  to water is place a pan under the tree and turn the water on and when the pan has 1 inch in it stop the water. Water when there is a dry spell. I would water if the soil under the trees is dry down a couple of inches deep. Then try to water only once  a week. Too much water is as bad for evergreens as too little. Mulch around the trees with not more than 3 inches deep  of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help hold the moisture around the roots. Do not fertilize for the first year.
