Removing Italian Cypress and Roots

Question
We have four Italian Cypress trees that have been planted since the 70's that must be removed.  I have been researching to find out about the root system of these trees.  The tree removal company said they will remove the stump and grind the roots 24 inches deep.  Will this allow for new trees to be planted?  Should I try to find a company who will grind down 48 inches?  Thank you!

Answer
The root system will be more deeper than spread out. They should have a tap root that will extend down 6-10 feet depending on the soil type and depth of the soil. The spread will be about 1 1/2 times the width of the branches. 24 inches below the ground level would be fine for the grinding. This is about normal for grinding and I have not heard of companies that go deeper. There will still be some woody material below the 2 foot level but it will decay over time. A new small tree could be planted and the root ball would not be more than 2 feet deep. As the tree grows the old stump will rot and the roots from the new tree will grow through this material. I do not think you will have a problem.
