QuestionI believe ficus trees should be trimmed yrly to contain roots and manage growth. Our 4 ficus are 25' tall and I'm getting resistance from the unit owners. What can I say so they will let the tree trimming begin, according to Broward code compliance.I also believe I am keeping the underground plumbing safe as we have had problems for 3 straight yrs of root intrusion and hurricane safe as much as possible. They don't believe the trees are causing the problems which the plumbing co has stated as such
AnswerNo I do not believe trees should be extensively pruned yearly to keep them small. Lower limbs should be pruned if they interfere with traffic going under the tree but besides that they should be left alone. Tree roots will not effect water pipes that are sealed. They can get into septic tanks and lines but not sewer lines. Cutting the tops back on trees will slow the growth down of the roots and not allow the roots to expand and help hold up a tree. A healthy crown will mean a healthy root system and make them as "hurricane safe" as possible. I would not prune them back for the roots reasons but if the limbs are rubbing the house or the lower limbs are causing problems then these limbs could be pruned off. Probably not the answer you wanted Sorry.
