bag worms-spruce tree

Question
Jim, I wrote to you beforeand these bagworms have definetely eaten most of my blue spruce. Their are a few green needles left on ends of branches but not many. It will be impossible for me to cut all these sacks off but I would like to save this tree. Should I spray it with Talspar now or wait. My home is for sale and this tree sure does look sad but I want to try to save it when my husband just wants to cut it down.  It is about 10 feet tall. What should I do. Thanks Pat

Answer
More than likely the bagworm caterpillars are not active now and have laid eggs in the bags so spraying will do no good for control. As long as there is still some green on the limbs it should be ok but you might not see much improvement until next spring. I would talk with your realtor and see if they think the "sad looking" tree will reflect on the selling of the house--curb appeal. IF so To make the sale I would cut it or just explain to potential buyers that the tree will leaf out but they should look out for bagworms early next spring and control them with an insecticide then.
