QuestionI have a 20 ft blue spruce tree that has always had two adjacent and parallel trunks. It is now starting to widen out at the top so that the trunks now form a V rather than staying parallel. Since the branches are growing out opposite sides of each of the two trunks, they weigh each trunk down in opposite directions, causing the trunks to separate. Should I tie the trunks together to keep them parallel? What should I do, if anything?
AnswerNot really anything that can be done that would help the tree. IF one of the forks were cut when it was young it would have grown more foliage on the cut side but the tree is too large now. I really would not be worry about the tree trees live as forked trees just fine. Tying the two together would not help and forks can be braced together with a bar or cable but this can cause decay fungi to get into the trunk causing more damage. Both forks are healthy and there is no concern about one breaking off so I would leave it be and enjoy the tree.
