QuestionHelp..we had to transplant our weeping cherry tree last week..a professional company dug out a hole with his "spade truck", removed the tree and planted it int he new spot..it has been very hot and dry here( we know it was the wrong time of year to transplant, but had no choice) he said to water it every day for 10-15 min. It's been 5 days and now leaves are turning yellow..is it going into shock or are we giving it too much or too little water..it never got watered regularly so this could be the problem too... thanks in advance for your assitance!
AnswerYou are right the worst time of the year to transplant a tree but it can be done. If you have not done so mulch around the tree with nit more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help hold moisture around the roots. Water with 1 inch of water very other day for a couple of weeks then every third day fro a week then once a week. Place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Do this if it does not rain. Timing the watering is difficult since you do not know how much water is coming out of the hose. I would also call the folks who planted the tree and ask IF there is a guarantee that the tree will live the first year. IF follow their recommendations and when it dies ask for another one to be planted.
