QuestionI have a large an seemingly heathy red oak that over the period of just a few days this week in June has dropped 1000's of small, undeveloped acorns. I live in central Indiana and have observed this oak for 19 years and have never seen this happen before. What is causing this?
AnswerAcorn take two years to reach mature size. Weather plays a big part in how many reach maturity. These small ones are the first year acorns and for some reason (weather) they have aborted. This does not effect the health of the tree just the amount of acorns. Do not worry about this tree.
