QuestionI have a weeping and a yoshino cherry tree. Both of which have little holes in the leaves. It looks like bugs may have been chewing on the leaves. What kind of bugs are doing this and how can I treat them?
AnswerThere are several insects that feed on cherry leaves--caterpillars to beetles. Look for these late in the day near sun set. You can spray an insecticide on the foliage that will kill any insect there but could be a waste if the insects have done their thing and now gone. I would try using an insecticide called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect control. This is applied to the soil around the tree and the roots will transport it to the leaves and when the insects feed they will be killed. This is a slow acting since it depends on rain fall and water to help move the insecticide and it takes some time for the roots to transport it to the leaves. But this will protect the tree for the year and if the insects have a couple of returning generations the later feeding insects will be killed. IF you use this product do not eat the fruit. Here is a web link to the product --check with your local garden type store for this.
