QuestionTwo years ago we planted our prized Aptos Blue Coast Redwood which is now about 10 feet tall. Last week our neighbor's tree trimmer dropped a branch which broke about 6 inches off the top of our redwood's leader - with its 4 top sprouts ranging 4 to 6 inches each now gone. The remaining section of leader has no discernible sprouts (maybe unbroken buds?) and extends 5 inches above the highest tree brances. Will this tree grow straight & tall - or should it be replaced?
AnswerIt will out grow the broken top since the tree is young. A side branch will over time become the new top terminal and you might see a slight bend in the top where the side branch became dominant. But in a few years you will not be able to tell the top was ever broken off. Leave the tree it will be ok and does not need replacing.
