salix willow (golden curl)?

Question
Hi there i have what i believe is a salix willow tree it has lime green twisted branches with deep red/brown off shoots. i have it about 13ft from the front wall of my semi-detached house(duplex). my neighbour is extremely worried about the foundations and drain system. it is about 3 years old and about 6ft tall with a spread of about 2to3 ft. should i be concerned and cut it down.

Answer
There will not be a problem with the foundation--the roots are fibrous and will not harm foundations. BUT If the tree is near a septic line the roots will get into the lines (sewer lines are different and are sealed so the roots can not get in the sewer lines. Willows like water so the roots will grow toward a source of water and septic lines especially the older ones leak and the root will enter the lines clogging the lines. A tree root system extends about 1 1/2 times the width of the branches and is within the first 2-3 feet of soil. This tree has a spread of about 15-20 feet when mature which means the roots spread about 20-30 feet from the trunk. The 13 feet from the house will not be a problem unless the septic line runs under the tree. IF you have conventional sewer lines there will be no problem.
