is my maple tree dying?

I just purchase my home, and I have a maple tree and the tree looks like it was burnt; the bark is back on one side of the tree from the base up (its regular looking on the one side). Is my tree dying? How can I help it?

The bark of maple does turn darker as it ages. Sometimes one side of the trunk will be darker than the other depending on the amount of sunlight on the trunk. IF the foliage is green and healthy looking the tree is fine. Nothing you said would mean that the tree is dying.
