lots of bored holes on blue cedar tree

Question
recently noticed maybe 50-100 bored holes on my blue cedar tree. Tree is about 15 yrs old,Bucks County Pa. Holes are approx 1/8",perfectly round. I know there is a carpenter bee in my shed out back, this tree is in front yard. The holes look very similar, both in the shed and on the tree. When I look at tree, I do not see any insects. Do you think its just carpenter bees or something else? thankyou

Answer
IF these holes are in a line around the tree trunk this is caused by a woodpecker called a sap sucker. The gird makes the holes and the tree exudes sap into the hole and insects feed on the sap and the bird returns to eat the insects. Spray the area with the holes with an insecticide and this will kill the insect and the woodpecker will stop coming. You can use any insecticide something like an ant spray will work.  Usually the hole will not harm the tree but can cause lumber from the tree to be stained.
