QuestionWe live in eastern North Carolina and would like to make a hedge row with the green giants. When would be a good time to plant these, with summer coming on would it be better to wait until fall .
AnswerThe best time would be early spring as the hardwoods are budding out. But if you use potted plants you can plant them almost anytime IF they are watered. The larger the better say around 5 gal size. I would avoid planting in the fall since the roots system will not have enough time to become established before a freeze.
Dig the holes twice the size of the pots and fill with good top soil or potting soil and mulch around the trees with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help keep moisture around the root system. Water once a week with 1 inch of water--place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it atop. I would do this for the first month then if it does not rain for a couple of weeks or so water again. Do not fertilize for the first year.
