QuestionI have a Bradford Fruitless Pear tree that my dog chewed the bark off of. There are some small areas where she did not go all the way around yet.The base of the trunk still has bark and toward the top but about 2 to 2 1/2 feet in the middle the bark is gone. Will it die? Is there something I can do or should put on it? Can I do anything to keep the dog from chewing anymore off?
AnswerNo if the wound does not extend all the way around the trunk the tree will survive. I would cut any loose bark from the wound and the tree will heal over the wound without any help. Wound dressing will slow the process down. Might try coating the bark with liquid hot sauce this should keep the dog away. Get the cheapest one you can find and maybe dilute it half with water and paint the trunk. There are also commercial dog repellents check with your local pet store for these.
